forging1 5 Things Not To Forget Once Youre MaxedThis post was inspired by one of my newer guildies. He’s quite young & although a very good player, he’s never really looked into gold making. I sent him to my blog & pointed out my blog roll. Ten minutes later on skype, he said that he’d learned something new to him & told me what it was. I was kind of surprised that he didn’t know it already because he’s a pretty smart cookie but it made me think of what else I take for granted that might not be so obvious to new goldmakers & so this post was born! I hope it helps any inexperienced readers to make some gold but also, it is a sharp reminder to the more experienced of us, not to forget some of the simpler thngs that we can do once we’re playing with our maxed professions.

 

Skinning & Leatherworking

When you first start skinning, you get a lot of Ruined Leather Scraps which I clearly remember selling to a vendor when I was totally new to game. If you don’t have a Leatherworker, you could learn it on a bank alt as converting these scraps to Light Leather is one of the very first skills you gain. Light Leather always sells for a better price than the scraps but there are also Knothide Leather Scraps, Borean Leather Scraps & Savage Leather Scraps at the higher levels which a Leatherworker can convert to their respective leathers or even, one step further into the ‘Heavy’ versions.

During Wrath, I found that Heavy Borean Leather always sold for a higher price than the normal version & so far, in Cataclysm, the same seems to be holding true for Savage Leather & Heavy Savage Leather. I used to use Heavy Borean Leather to trade in for Arctic Furs & now I use Heavy Savage Leather to trade in for Pristine Hides.

 

Mining

This was the little tip that my guildie didn’t know – bars of metal often sell for a higher price than the ore. This can work at all levels – if you think which professions use bars (Blacksmith, Jewelcrafting & Engineering as well as a few for rare Tailoring or Leatherworking patterns) then it seems to a newer player that pairing those professions with mining is an obvious choice. However, once they have maxed their Blacksmith/JC/Engineer, players often drop their mining for a second crafting profession. This leaves them reliant on the Auction House for their supply of bars & that leaves them open to paying slightly higher prices!

This can work at all levels of mining from Copper & Tin all the way upto Elementium & Pyrite ore but that’s not all. There are also a few ‘special’ bars that a miner can make – namely Enchanted Thorium Bar, Hardened Khorium, Hardened Adamantite, Titansteel & of course, Hardened Elementium.  Currently I make Enchanted Thorium (to craft & disenchant) & Hardened Elementium but as always, check your own servers’ markets. The Khorium & Adamantite are very rare on my server mainly because they are the older outdated max level items & there is not much demand for level 70 epic gear anymore. Titansteel is also the old outdated version of the current max level bar but it is used by Engineers to make the chopper/hog which is still selling for  good price on my server – there may be a market there on your server.

 

Jewelcrafting

If you have mining as well, this one can be very useful – check the prices for gems at all levels – often the lower level ores sell for a pittance whilst the gems you can prospect from those ores sell for silly high prices. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a miner, just buy those low priced ores & prospect away! If you’re not sure which ore prospects to which gems, auctioneer can add that information to your tooltip or you can check it out under ‘prospecting‘ on wowhead.

 

Tailoring

Unlike ores, converting various cloths into bolts is not quite so reliable. However, some bolts of cloth do sell very well & for me that’s the Imbued Frostweave. I would say, as always, check your own server – in the past, I had good sales with bolts of Netherweave cloth & even Wool.

The other items not to overlook in Tailoring are the Netherweave Bags (very good seller on almost every server, it’s a very common tip) but also the shirts, trousers & robes especially if you are on a Role Play server. With the introduction of Transmogrification in the next patch, there could be an upsurge in the shirts market especially if people want to colour match to their new set.

 

Enchanting

As with Tailoring, this one’s not quite so reliable but I have been having some nice profits from this one for a while now. Raid your AH for all the very, very cheap ‘green’ armor & weapons & disenchant them. You will mostly be finding the very lowest item level greens but sometimes you can pick up higher level items to disenchant to dream dust or arcane dust for example.

I’m also an alt-addict so I almost always have an alt somewhere levelling & picking up cloth as they go. For any linen & wool, if the price of the cloth on the AH is very low, I craft it into the cheapest green item I can then disenchant that. I often look for very very cheap linen cloth on the AH  & craft that too.

auctioneer lady 5 Ways to Make Gold on a Low Level Bank AltAlmost every gold blog going has suggested a low level bank alt for newbie goldmakers – it’s a basic necessity when you first start out on your gold making journey. I’d also say it’s a necessity when you first start playing the game or when you want to start fresh on a new server. Having the ability to just mail everything saleable to one alt & then list it at the AH later saves so much time while questing & you maximise your profits instead of vendoring or just deleting stuff to make space!

Now I always feel the need to level my banker a little – probably because I really enjoy those first lowbie zones but also (especially on a new server) because it raises a little cash to start the ball rolling. But my banker doesn’t just sit in Stormwind, oh no – she has work to do as part of my gold making routine. I thought I’d list just a few of the things my bankers do for me & how your banker can work a little harder for you too.

1. Limited Supply Vendor Recipes & Pets

I pretty much covered this in last week’s post re the RecipeProfit addon but for my banker – she just does a run around Ironforge with an occasional side trip to Darnassus or Exodar to purchase any recipes/patterns/plans etc that are available from various vendors.

For the pets, I have found the Moth Eggs from Exodar are my best sellers with the White Kitten available in Stormwind from Lil Timmy selling for the highest price. Unfortunately Timmy is on a 3hour spawn timer so getting a regular supply of White Kittens is difficult.

2. Flipping items on the AH – Buy Low, Sell Higher

Using Auctioneer or Auctionator, you can often find some really good deals – I tend to stick with trade items like cloth or low level gems (malachite/star ruby/aquamarine  especially). I tend to stay away from armor & weapons purely because prices can vary so much, they can take a while to resell & the AH deposit fees are usually quite high. One or two relists & you could easily wipe out any profits.

3. Cooking

Yes, cooking! If you base your alt in one of the capital cities that has cooking dailies, you can do the cooking daily to get XP & some cash & spend your Chef’s Awards on the bag of Imported Supplies. Once opened, it will give you Cocoa Beans – usually 2 stacks which you can sell on the AH. Check the price of Chocolate Cookies on your server & price your Cocoa Beans just below – that way, the Cookie Makers will be able to buy your beans & still make some profits.

Obviously, if you’ve levelled your banker much higher then you can also look on the AH for meat & fish to cook up into buff foods – watch the prices for a few days before jumping in though – I find buff food prices to be very erratic on my server.

4. Inscription

This one isn’t for everybody as it does require some ‘nursing’ to get the best returns. I did a post on my own blog back at the beginning of July with a level 10 bank alt glypher – I won’t try to re-write the post here but basically, if you can get really cheap herbs on your server, you can probably make a nice profit on glyphs & Darkmoon Faire Decks.

5. Tailoring/Enchanting

Why these two professions in particular? Well I’m aiming this at people who are still levelling new characters through the lowest zones – you will pick up shedloads of linen cloth & wool cloth & although you could just sell it on the AH, I have often found that prices for a stack are ridiculously low due to the almost unlimited supply. It also doesn’t matter what professions you have on your levelling alts – they will pick up cloth anyway. However, when you use this cheap linen to make into something using your tailoring (for example, Brown Linen Pants) , you can then disenchant it & sell the enchanting materials for a much higher price.

You can also search the AH for armor & re-sort the listing to show by lowest bid price – anything below say 50silver may be worth bidding on to be disenchanted. I’ve been doing exactly this on my main server – my budget is a little higher as I have maxed my enchanting & I am looking for materials across the whole range but I am still making some nice profits. Not huge profits admittedly but that’s not actually the aim for me – I’m trying to get the Guild Achievement!

Low Level Items to Craft for Profit – Part 2

As promised, this week, I’m looking at the next four professions on my list. None of the items sell in large quantities but the mark up is often huge (on my server anyway) so as always, check out your AH for materials costs & for selling prices before diving in to any new market.

Engineering

Mechanical Squirrel Box – skill level 75, recipe drop in Gnomeregan but can often be found for less than 25g at AH.

Lil’ Smoky – skill level 205, zone drop in Gnomeregan so some farming required. Also requires Fused Wiring (skill level 275)

Pet Bombling – skill level 205, drops from Mechaneer Thermaplug in Gnomeregan.

Fused Wiring – skill level 275 – vendor bought in Shattrath or Winterspring – easy materials & often sells well to other lower level engineers making pets  icon smile Low Level Items to Craft for Profit Part 2

Blacksmithing

Thick Bronze Darts – skill level 100, learned from trainer. One of the earliest thrown weapons & good for skill ups while making a bit of gold too.

Iron Buckle – skill level 150, learned from trainer. Used by tailors & leatherworkers whilst they level.

Dense Grinding Stone – skill level 250, learned from trainer. Used most often for handing in at Darkmoon Faire. Time sensitive so buy dense stone mid month between the Faires & either make these to hand in yourself (some rare patterns drop in goody bags) or price them fairly at time of the Faire.

Enchanting Rods – various skill levels, most are trainer taught. All enchanters need various metal rods as they level but they have to buy them. Fel Iron Rod for example, often sells for 100g or more. Check your AH when you get a rod plan from your trainer & see if they are worthwhile crafting for your server.

Jewelcrafting

Delicate Copper Wire – skill level 1, trainer taught. These give around 30 skill up points when you first learn JC. They are also used by Engineers to make their Fused Wiring mentioned above. Cheap to make & a reasonably profitable item to make for other lazy JC’ers.

Mithril Filigree – skill level 150, trainer taught. These sell OK on my server, small profits but regular, especially if I can get a good deal on the mithril ore or bars!

Other items to look for – several other component type items – all sell ok for me. Low level rings can sell well but often a full market as other levellers fill the AH. Look for low mat costs to make items to disenchant (if you have an enchanter too) – think Obsidium Shuffle for low level ores – check ore prices against gem prices & prospect for profit.

Enchanting

Enchanted Thorium Bar – skill level 250, trainer taught. If you have a blacksmith available, use these to make Enchanted Thorium Blades to disenchant for Greater Eternal Essences. If not, you can still sell these at a small but regular profit to Blacksmiths

Enchant Weapon – Agility – skill level 290, reputation purchase from Timbermaw quartermaster in Felwood. Sounds difficult to get but I did it in under 2hours from Neutral to Exalted reputation. Regularly sells for over 800g on my server but needs Essence of Air so you may need to farm for those.

This was a tough one for me. I don’t make any low level enchant scrolls but I do disenchant low level green quality items on a regular basis for dusts and essences. Search the armor & weapons categories only, sorting by bid price, lowest first. Bid on any green item less than say 50silvers then re-sort the AH to search by Buyout price. If there aren’t many low level items to disenchant at this price level, you can raise your buying threshold but look for slightly higher level items too.

 

So there we go – a fairly brief list of some of the items I’ve found to be profitable on my server across various professions. I think you can see that having multiple professions is very, very useful – even at low levels. Next week, I’m planning on rounding up a few items from the remaining professions – Mining, Fishing, Skinning etc. I hope you find this a useful starting point on your gold making journey.
